Misery or Mizeria? ;-)

Mizeria surely is not about ‘misery’ ;-) and has a long tradition in Polish cuisine and dates back to the 16th century. The legend has it that it was one of the favorite salads of the Queen Bona Sforza.(She was an Italian princess who married the Polish king Sigismund I).

It is a cucumber salad being an addition for the main course for dinner. It is widely popular in Poland and usually may be served with roasted chicken and mashed potatoes.
Mizeria is extremely easy to prepare. Also, you can opt for a ‘sweet’ or ‘sour’ version of mizeria.

Find below these recipes:

‘SOUR’ VARIATION 1:

1.You will need:

- 1 long fresh cucumber
- A cup of natural yoghurt (or a cup of dense sour cream)
- Salt & pepper
- A few drops of vinegar

2. Preparation steps:
- Slice thinly the cucumber and sprinkle with salt. Leave it for some minutes placed on a dish and let the cucumber juice be produced. Then get rid of the cucumber juice, add pepper and yoghurt (or cream if you decided to stick with cream instead of natural yoghurt).
- Mix the yoghurt with cucumber pieces. It is ready!

‘SWEET’ VARIATION 2:

1.You will need:

- 1 long fresh cucumber
- A cup of natural yoghurt (or a cup of dense sour cream)
- Salt & pepper
- Powdered Sugar (just a bit for taste)

2. Preparation steps:
- Slice thinly the cucumber and sprinkle with salt. Leave it for some minutes placed on a dish and let the cucumber juice be produced.
- Then get rid of the cucumber juice, add pepper and yoghurt (or cream if you decided to stick with cream instead of natural yoghurt). Mix the yoghurt with cucumber pieces. Add powdered sugar and stir all the ingredients with a spoon.

TIPS:

- Cut the cucumber thinly. It will taste better.
- Some people add bits of fresh dill or mint leaves for taste. You can discover your own favorite taste.
-If you are a ‘weight-watcher’, I would suggest choosing natural low-fat yoghurt instead of sour cream. (Although I find the sour cream version just tastier).
